Websites should reflect your business and evolve with constant changes and growth. Sometimes these changes are slow and small, other times seismic and unexpected.

During challenging times, communication is key to keep your customers informed of your current situation and offers. Your business blog is a great tool to reach your customer base, local community, stretch your brand and capture the attention of your competitors' customers.

9 Ways to Win When Blogging for Business

In the meantime, here are 9 points — some quick wins to take your blogging to the next level...

  1. Check out what other people in your niche are blogging about, and do it better. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, just make it better!
  2. Write in your voice and write for real people, not search engines. Authenticity builds trust and keeps readers coming back.
  3. Keep paragraphs short and punchy. Use sub-headings and bullet points to make it easy for the reader to digest while getting your main points across. Kinda like the way I wrote this short article!
  4. Always finish with a call to action (CTA). Tell your readers what you want them to do next. "Take a FREE website audit to increase conversions and improve search rankings." (link to your product or service page, make it easy for your readers). Book a Website Audit here.
  5. Use at least one image in the blog post and name the photo before you upload it. The name should be a short description of the image and, if possible, include your keyword. Eg. "woman-holding-bottle-of-almond-milk.jpg". This helps with SEO and accessibility for people with visual impairments.
  6. If possible, embed a video into your blog. One of the easiest metrics Google uses to measure the validity and relevance of your post is how long visitors spend on your page. If they read and then watch a video for 2, 5 or 10 minutes, Google will take note and rank your post higher in search results.
  7. No fluff or filler, just killer content. There is no set length to aim for but 500 words should be your minimum word count. For competitive topics, aim for 1,500-2,000 words to outrank competitors.
  8. Add value! Answer people's questions and queries. Use "People Also Ask" boxes in Google search and tools like AnswerThePublic to find real questions your audience is asking.
  9. Before publishing, put yourself in the customer's shoes. Ask yourself: "What else could I do to add more value to this post?" Add a checklist, a template, a tool recommendation, or a downloadable guide.
